A workshop on tradition, ethics, and culture, organized by the senior chiefs of Busolya, has begun at the Royal Palace in Mengo.

On behalf of Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, Bishop Gerald Kalumba, Vicar General of Kampala, opened the workshop. He said the church respects families as the foundation of society, noting that a family is the first “church” and the first school of values. He emphasized that individuals should be respectful, polite, and humble.

Bishop Kalumba also expressed concern over challenges facing families when parents are preoccupied with work and leave children under the care of domestic workers. He said this can prevent children from receiving proper guidance and emotional support. He urged parents to take responsibility for guiding their children in ways that will benefit their future lives.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, represented by Hon. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, said that acting with humility and walking together with others reflects the true image of a humane family. He added that it is essential to strengthen families to uphold these values.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Namwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba, Chairperson of the Chiefs’ Council, said that the family is the source of civilization, humanity, communication, good behavior, cleanliness, and personal development. He added that when these qualities are absent in an individual, it reflects on the family in which they grew up.

The workshop focused on the theme: “The Family Nourishes Humanity.”
