Owek. Joseph Kawuki, Buganda Minister for Local Government and External Affairs
MENGO – The Buganda Kingdom has officially resumed its operations following a brief suspension to allow officials and citizens to participate in the recently concluded national elections.
The Kingdom’s government, known as Butikkiro, had paused its activities on Wednesday, 14 January, ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections held on 15 January. The move was intended to respect the country’s constitution and citizens’ democratic right to vote.
Call for unity
In his first public address since the resumption of work, Owek. Joseph Kawuki, the Minister for Local Government, External Affairs and Kabaka Affairs, issued a strong appeal for unity following what he described as a politically divisive campaign period.
Addressing both winners and those who were unsuccessful, Mr Kawuki stressed that the interests of the Buganda Kingdom should remain the top priority.
“We commend our people for participating in the presidential and parliamentary elections. We congratulate those who emerged victorious and expect them to serve with responsibility and integrity.”
He urged political actors and the public to embrace reconciliation.
“I call upon everyone to forgive one another, respect differing views and uphold peace and stability.”
Focus on local government
As the country prepares for upcoming local government elections, the minister highlighted the critical role of local leaders, noting their close collaboration with the Kabaka’s chiefs in delivering services and implementing community programmes.
“Citizens should elect leaders who respect the Kabaka, are honest and capable of providing effective leadership,” Mr Kawuki said.
He also called on security agencies to carry out their duties professionally and with compassion, while urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid acts that could threaten public order.
Education and development priorities
With the new school term approaching, the Kingdom announced that the Kabaka’s Education Fund will continue supporting eligible families to ease the cost of education.
The initiative forms part of Buganda’s broader development agenda, commonly referred to as the Five Strategic Pillars, which focus on education, health, agriculture, tourism and strengthening local governance.
