The King thanked UNESCO for their support to the Kingdom in the restoration of the Kasubi Tombs

The King thanked UNESCO for their support to the Kingdom in the restoration of the Kasubi Tombs

The King was speaking at the Mengo Palace, during a meeting with UNESCO official, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, and various officials from UNESCO.

In his message, the King said.

He is pleased with the good relationship between Buganda and UNESCO, which has helped Buganda to showcase its culture in Africa and the world.

"We are well aware that in 2001, the Kasubi Tombs was promoted to the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The promotion attracted many people from all over the world to come and do research on the Kingdom of Buganda and promoted the Kasubi Tombs.

We respect this relationship, because Buganda is recognized in the world, and we pledge to strengthen our relationship with UNESCO.

The fire that burnt down the Kasubi Tombs in 2010, not only drowned the hearts of our people, but also the economy of the people around the Tombs was affected because they used to sell goods to tourists.

Although we sometimes operate in a difficult economic, and political environment, we get a boost from the support we receive from agencies like UNESCO that recognize the cultural weight and benefits it has.

As Buganda, and in Africa as a whole, we must believe that culture and development go hand in hand. The oppression of people's culture and traditions, results in many problems, social, and economic, all affecting people.

This is contrary to God's plan, who created human beings and placed them in the same community, but with their own cultures that differ from those of others.

I thank UNESCO for their support in the restoration of the Kasubi Tombs, I thank the Government of Japan for providing us with modern fire extinguishers, and I thank the Government of Uganda for its financial and other assistance.

Based on the above, I urge UNESCO to rely on what we have done, to include the Kasubi Tombs in the list of endangered sites, because it is now not a concern, and we are ready to complete the remaining work on time"
