The Kabaka has congratulated the Sugar Corporation of Uganda Ltd, a subsidiary of the Mehta Group, for reaching 100 years of service to Ugandans.

In a message delivered by Prince David Kintu Wasajja during the centenary celebrations in Lugazi, the Kabaka expressed his appreciation to Mr. Nanji Kalidas for his visionary leadership in establishing the factory, which has become crucial to the nation's development.

This vision has brought significant progress to the people of Lugazi and Uganda as a whole.

The President, who was the guest of honour, praised the Mehta Group for their resilience during the challenging period when President Idi Amin expelled Asians from Uganda in 1972.

Despite the difficulties, the Mehta family persevered and have now achieved great success in the economy.

The President emphasised that returning properties and factories to the Asian community was a responsible decision, as it helped restore confidence in international investors who had been hesitant due to the earlier expropriation of assets.

The Lugazi sugar factory was the first of its kind in Uganda.
