The committee responsible for the restoration of Kabaka’s Lake convened at Bulange, Mengo, to discuss strategies and practical steps needed to ensure the restoration works are carried out successfully and that the lake is returned to its former glory.

The meeting was attended by the Buganda Minister for Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Hon. Anthony Wamala, and committee members in charge of overseeing the lake restoration efforts. Also present was Pastor Robert Kayanja of Miracle Center in Ndeeba.

Hon. Wamala stated, “Kabaka’s lake is a cultural and tourism site that holds great significance to many people. Plans have already been drawn; all the lake land is titled. Even though many people have encroached on it, restoration efforts are already in motion to ensure the lake regains its dignity.”

He further explained that although many people think nothing is being done to protect Buganda’s heritage, the Buganda Kingdom and its partners are fully aware of the progress being made concerning the Kabaka’s Lake.

He noted that although the process has taken some time, tangible progress is now being made. He appreciated Pastor Kayanja for stepping up to work alongside the Kingdom on this matter.

In his remarks, Pastor Robert Kayanja praised the initiative, saying, “this lake will help save Kampala. We’ve seen buildings catch fire, and yet the water used to extinguish them comes from far in Lake Victoria. Kabaka’s Lake is within the city and could provide emergency water when fires break out in our capital.”

He expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom for the restoration plan, and after reviewing the roadmap presented during the meeting, he was further convinced that this project will bring great honor to the Buganda Kingdom and the entire country.

He pledged to work closely with the committee to ensure that the mission is successfully accomplished.

Committee Chairperson Omuk. John Fred Kiyimba Freeman explained that the committee has already issued a plan approved by the Kabaka’s Cabinet.

He said the lake covers approximately 67 acres, although some people have encroached on the land. These individuals have already been cautioned and reminded to vacate the land, as the restoration activities are set to begin without delay.

The committee resolved to focus on four key action points:

  1. Implementing the existing restoration plan
  2. Collaborating with KCCA and the Ministry of Lands to ensure that the road bordering the lake is properly constructed
  3. Partnering with Pastor Kayanja on water filteration initiatives, including a large pit dug for water filteration and use of aquatic plants to remove pollutants..
  4. Erecting a perimeter wall around all titled lake land to ensure it is well protected
