Buganda Kingdom premier Charles Peter Mayiga met with the Buganda youths in various universities in the Acholi regions and urged them to stick to their culture norms.
The venue of the meeting was at Gulu University and was attended by universities from Gulu, Lira, Pakwach, Soroti and Bugisu.etc
In his message, Katikkiro urged them to interact well with the people they live with in terms of behaviour and to learn their language, and also respect the Acholi customs.
He advised the students to concentrate on their studies,so that they finish their education, and to know that they are not helping anyone but helping themselves when they study.
According to him, education is liberation because it gives 'us the tools that enable us to think for ourselves and create situations that would transform ourselves'.
He stated that he wants education to help them better understand their culture and traditions. “I don’t want education to become a stumbling block for what you believe because the Europeans wanted to instill their ideas in us and take ours away from us,”
He further noted that our culture may require us to make some adjustments as needed, as a result of knowledge and wisdom based on what we have learned.
He said that when education makes you abandon your culture, your people, and your traditions, then that education is useless unless education helps us to understand and take pride in our culture, then the true liberation of Africa will have surfaced.
He urged the youth in this university to attain leadership skills because without leadership there is no progress.
The Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts, Oweek Robert Sserwanga Saalongo, urged the youth to be useful wherever they are and asked leaders to always lead by example so that others can learn from.
The Minister of Local Government and Overseas Affairs, Mr. Joseph Kawuki, also attended the ceremony.
