Members of The Uganda Kidney Association visited Bulange, Mmengo, to seek support from the Buganda Kingdom in raising awareness about kidney diseases.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga met with representatives of the association, who are directly affected by kidney disease. He urged the government to prioritize healthcare, especially by training medical professionals and improving their working conditions to facilitate better service delivery.

The meeting, held on Thursday at Bulange, emphasized the need for public sensitization about kidney disease. Katikkiro Mayiga encouraged people to undergo regular health check-ups to monitor their wellbeing and consult specialists when necessary.

He also appealed to the government to enhance healthcare infrastructure by providing modern equipment and ensuring drug availability.

“We urge people to be proactive in checking their health, remain resilient, and seek medical advice promptly without fear. The government must prioritize healthcare by addressing the needs of medical professionals and curbing drug theft,” said Katikkiro Mayiga.

He reassured the association of the Buganda Kingdom’s commitment to promoting health awareness through various programs. Additionally, he highlighted the growing prevalence of diseases like cancer, diabetes, and kidney conditions, urging early detection and treatment.

Katikkiro Mayiga also cautioned the public to be mindful of their diet, noting that unhealthy eating habits contribute to many illnesses. He advised the youth to reduce alcohol consumption, as it is a significant cause of preventable diseases.

The Buganda Kingdom’s Minister of Health, Hon. Cotilidah Nakate Kikomeko, reminded people to prioritize their health above all else, stressing that a healthy population is essential for the Kingdom's prosperity.

Sam Lukwago, a kidney patient and leader within the association, revealed that many Ugandans are unaware of the burden kidney disease places on the nation. He called on the Katikkiro to amplify their voice and help raise awareness.

The meeting was also attended by the Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, Hon. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, and other kingdom officials.
