Buganda Kingdom has partnered with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) united under the 'Girls Not Brides Uganda' initiative to combat child pregnancies and early marriages

They gathered at the Bulange in Mengo, where they discussed strategies to end these harmful practices under the theme, “Children, and Leaders of Tomorrow Uniting to Fight Early Marriages, Teenage Pregnancies, and Promote Education.”

The Minister for Youth, Sports, and Culture in Buganda, Hon. Robert Serwanga, who was speaking during the event, urged law enforcement agencies to take action against those perpetrating harmful acts against children to stop this vicious cycle.

"In Buganda, teenage pregnancy is a serious issue. Here, children often fall pregnant before reaching maturity, and many times, their parents or communities fail to protect them from early marriages and teenage pregnancies," said Hon. Serwanga.

The Minister added that there are also individuals who use cultural, religious, or other influences to encourage these practices. He emphasised that such people should be held accountable and face legal consequences.

He further explained that promoting positive values in children, such as respect for others and good manners, is crucial in preventing early pregnancies and ensuring that children stay in school.

Hon. Serwanga also warned children to avoid dangerous behaviours, such as those who use drugs, as this often leads to influencing others to engage in harmful activities, which is frequently the root cause of early pregnancies.

He encouraged students to focus on their education and avoid distractions that could pull them away from their studies, reminding them not to be sidetracked by trivial matters.
