The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on parents to actively involve their children in family enterprises, saying this will help sustain the work for future generations and prevent it from dying out even when children grow up or relocate abroad.

Katikkiro Mayiga made these remarks while meeting members of the Poultry Association of Uganda at the Bulange in Mengo, where the group had gone to introduce themselves and request support from the Kingdom in promoting poultry farming in Buganda.

“The Indians have succeeded in business because they involve their children in their family enterprises from a young age. We must emulate them. Parents should show their children what they do early in life, so that when they grow up, they can build on these enterprises,” Katikkiro Mayiga said.

He applauded the association for their efforts and stressed that eradicating poverty requires people to focus on sectors where they have a natural advantage. Buganda, he noted, places emphasis on agriculture and animal husbandry because these are deeply rooted in its culture and expertise. The Katikkiro assured the group that the Kingdom would support their initiatives and encouraged Ugandans to embrace poultry farming and increase consumption of both chicken and eggs.

The association’s chairperson, Henry Mambwe, delivered their message to the Katikkiro, highlighting their commitment to work with the Kingdom to grow poultry farming. He emphasized that partnering with Buganda would help their association educate farmers, increase income levels, and uplift livelihoods, contributing to the Kingdom’s development goals.

Mambwe and his team also announced a donation of UGX 9 million to support the Kingdom’s projects. The Katikkiro encouraged poultry farmers to adopt modern technology in order to maximize production. He advised them to use tools such as vaccination equipment, egg collection machinery, and online platforms to expand their markets and streamline operations.

The Kingdom’s Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Cooperatives, Owek. Hajji Amisi Kakomo, reiterated Kabaka’s directive to fight poverty through agriculture, citing the Kingdom’s Emmwanyi Terimba (Coffee Production) initiative as an example of this vision. He applauded the poultry farmers for visiting the Bulange and contributing towards strengthening poultry farming in Buganda.

The meeting was also attended by Owek. Robert Serwanga, Buganda’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Talent Development (himself a poultry farmer and trainer), Omuk. Alfred Bakyusa, Executive Director of BUCADEF, businessman Aga Ssekalaala Jr., and other dignitaries.
