Omutaka James Mubiru Zziikwa V, the 38th Gabunga of the Emmamba clan
The Buganda Kingdom’s traditional court, known as Kkooti ya Kisekwa, has delivered its ruling in the long-standing case concerning the leadership of the Emmamba clan, officially confirming James Mubiru Zziikwa V as the rightful Gabunga.
Mubiru becomes the 38th Gabunga, succeeding the late Yosiya Kasozi, who previously held the title as the 36th Gabunga. According to the court’s ruling, the succession followed proper procedures and was in line with the will left behind by Kasozi. The court declared that James Mubiru was explicitly named as the heir to the Gabunga title, making his installation both valid and legitimate.
The petitioners in the case—Erusania Ssevviiri Galiwango, Ruth Ndagire, Alex Ndiwalana, and Ruth Mirembe—had argued that Mubiru’s appointment was unlawful and claimed that he was not the rightful successor. However, Kisekwa Court Judge, Dr. Robert Ssonko, stated that the evidence from Kasozi’s will clearly designated Mubiru as his successor and that the court’s role was to offer guidance and unity—not to divide the clan.

Following the ruling, the Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of the Emmamba clan, Gerald Kaberenge, called for unity, saying all members of the clan should now come together, recognizing that they share the same heritage. He urged those involved to set aside any differences and focus on building the clan’s future through harmony and cooperation.
The case, which has taken over 12 years of hearings and investigations, was one of the most significant in the clan’s recent history. The verdict provides final clarity on the succession and affirms the authority of traditional processes in the governance of Buganda's clans.
The court ruling was signed by several traditional officials, including former judge Joshua Kateregga, court secretary Lubega Ssebende, Wilson Ssentongo, Jamil Ssewanyana, Samuel Walusimbi, George Makumbi, Deogratius Kasozi, and Salim Makeera.
