The Late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya

The Buganda Kingdom deeply mourns the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. The Kingdom extends heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and friends for the loss of this esteemed grandson of Muteesasira. We pray that Allah grants him eternal peace.

The life of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya

Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya was a Member of Parliament representing Kawempe North. He was born in 1988 in Butale-Kaddugala, Masaka District, in the Buddu region. Later, he relocated to Kyebando in Kawempe Division, Kampala, where he started a new chapter in his life.

Ssegirinya was the son of the late Peter Ssemaganda and Justine Nakajuumba. He passed away on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital at 12:10 PM.

His service and achievements

Ssegirinya will be remembered for his dedicated service to the people, particularly the residents of Kyebando. His unwavering commitment earned him the nickname "The Voice of Kyebando" after gaining public attention through radio and television programs, supported by funds he raised within his community after fetching water.

Determined to further improve his community, Ssegirinya pursued additional education and ventured into politics. In 2016, he was elected as a KCCA Councillor, and in 2021, he was elected to Parliament, representing Kawempe North.

During his first 100 days in office as a Member of Parliament, he accomplished several of his manifesto promises. Notably, he utilized the 200 million UGX allocated by Parliament for purchasing a vehicle to achieve the following:

  • Constructing Kawempe North Hospital, equipped with free medication for the community.
  • Purchasing two ambulances to improve access to emergency healthcare.
  • Establishing an Orphanage Centre to care for vulnerable children.

However, after his incarceration, many of these initiatives struggled to sustain themselves. The hospital was closed, its facilities repurposed into a guest house, and the orphanage was left incomplete.

His health challenges

Ssegirinya’s time in prison severely impacted his health, leading to prolonged hospital stays after his release. Despite his resilience and dedication, his declining health ultimately claimed his life.

The Buganda Kingdom expresses profound sympathy to the entire nation, particularly to Ssegirinya's family and friends, for the loss of such a visionary and dedicated leader.

“In this era entrusted by the Kabaka to the youth, it is deeply sorrowful to witness the passing of promising young leaders like Hon. Ssegirinya, who devoted themselves to the service of their people.”

The Minister further emphasized that despite his short life, Ssegirinya leaves behind an inspiring legacy of perseverance and commitment to public service.

We bow in reverence, Your Majesty the Kabaka.
