Officials from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and GIZ, along with environmental experts, met with senior representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in the Kingdom of Buganda to discuss the launch of the "Energy and Climate Change Smart Strategy."

The strategy aims to ensure that the people of Buganda harness solar energy for cooking and other activities in a manner that remains effective despite erratic weather patterns.

Proponents believe the initiative will be well received because it empowers residents to adopt modern, sustainable cooking methods.

Moving away from wood and coal

Experts say the plan will help reduce deforestation for wood and charcoal while promoting afforestation and the development of cooking methods that minimize wood consumption.

The strategy centers on coal-efficient stoves, electric cooking, and incentives to shift away from firewood-based practices. Some experts suggest that electric cooking may prove to be more cost-effective than traditional methods using wood and coal.

Call for lower electricity prices

Environmentalists stress that for the strategy to gain traction, the government must lower electricity prices. They argue that reduced energy costs are essential to encourage more residents to adopt these cleaner, modern cooking methods and ultimately help protect the environment.
