The Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged Ugandans to strengthen respect for the rule of law, saying it is the fundamental pillar that enables sustainable security and national development.
In his message marking the commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum Day, the Katikkiro said the country cannot achieve genuine and lasting peace without full respect for the law and human rights.
He noted that the day should serve as a reminder to both citizens and leaders of the importance of upholding justice and avoiding acts of violence and human rights violations.
“Security and development can only be achieved when the rule of law is fully respected and upheld by everyone,” Katikkiro Mayiga said.
Condemnation of Political Violence
The Katikkiro also condemned acts of political violence, particularly those associated with elections, saying such actions contradict the legacy left behind by Janani Luwum.
He said Uganda’s history clearly demonstrates the dangers of state-supported violence and called upon leaders to ensure such actions are never repeated.

The Legacy of Janani Luwum
Archbishop Janani Luwum was killed on February 16, 1977, during the presidency of Idi Amin. He is remembered for his courage in condemning violence and injustice, despite facing grave personal danger.
As Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire, Luwum was a prominent voice in defending human rights and justice.
The Katikkiro said Luwum’s legacy remains highly relevant today, especially as Uganda continues to face various political and governance challenges.
Official Day of Commemoration
In 2016, the Government of Uganda officially declared February 16 as Janani Luwum Day, in recognition of his life and service.
The commemoration provides an opportunity for Ugandans to reflect on the importance of faith, justice, and courage in defending truth.
Katikkiro Mayiga concluded by calling upon all Ugandans, both at home and in the diaspora, to unite in strengthening the nation through respect for the rule of law, justice, and the protection of human rights.
