The Kingdom of Buganda has signed a partnership agreement with Ernest Cook University Research Institute (ECUREI) to enhance healthcare services and provide affordable medical solutions to the people of Buganda.

The partnership focuses on addressing prevalent health challenges, including prostate cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer and other common illnesses, through advanced diagnostic and treatment services.

Under this collaboration, ECUREI will provide free screenings for up to 1,000 individuals annually, along with specialised medical camps targeting critical illnesses.

The agreement was signed by Owek. Cotilda Nakate Kikomeko, Buganda’s Minister of Health, on behalf of the Kingdom, and Prof. George Kirya, representing ECUREI.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga served as a witness to this landmark agreement during the signing ceremony at Bulange, Mengo.

Speaking at the event, Katikkiro Mayiga emphasised the importance of proactive healthcare, urging people to adopt healthier lifestyles. He also thanked the allies for addressing the concerns of the people of the King.

"The people of Buganda must prioritise their health by engaging in regular exercise, eating nutritious meals, staying hydrated, and seeking timely medical check-ups. Prevention is always better than cure," he said.

The partnership aims to:

  1. Provide affordable and accessible medical services to the people of Buganda.
  2. Raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and disease prevention.
  3. Train and equip healthcare workers in Buganda’s health centres with advanced skills and tools to improve service delivery.

Prof. Michael Grace Kawooya, Vice-Chancellor of ECUREI, highlighted that the collaboration will leverage technology and expertise to enhance healthcare standards.

He added that ECUREI is committed to supporting Buganda’s health initiatives by training healthcare workers and offering resources to combat critical diseases.

Owek. Cotilda Nakate Kikomeko reiterated the significance of the partnership, noting that it will uplift the overall well-being of Buganda’s population.

"This agreement is a major step towards ensuring that Kabaka’s people receive quality healthcare. We are confident that the partnership will deliver impactful results," she said.

As part of its contribution, ECUREI has donated UGX 2 million to support the operations of Buganda’s health initiatives under this collaboration.

Katikkiro Mayiga called on the people of Buganda to trust qualified medical professionals and avoid seeking treatment from unverified sources.

He also warned against the consumption of unhealthy foods and encouraged adopting healthier practices, including regular check-ups and physical activity.

This partnership symbolises a shared commitment between Buganda and ECUREI to enhance the quality of life for the Kingdom’s people through better healthcare access and education. It is a step towards a healthier, stronger Buganda.
