Every year, institutions under the Buganda Kingdom compete in various sports including omweso, ludo, boxing, football, volleyball, athletics, tug-of-war, and others.
This year’s games were held at the Lubiri in Mengo under the theme “OMMANYI”, aimed at strengthening unity and understanding among the Kingdom’s workers.
While speaking at the event, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized the importance of knowing one another in the workplace:
“At work, one of the things that makes service effective is knowing someone beyond their name. Understand their moods — how does a colleague behave when they are happy? How do they act when they are upset? If you do not understand the person you work with, it becomes difficult to work together.”
In opening the games, the Katikkiro stressed that teamwork is essential, comparing it to a properly functioning vehicle:
“A smooth-running car depends on every part doing its job — the gearbox, the engine, the tyres. A good driver knows the condition of each part. In the same way, as we perform the Kabaka’s work and strive to lift Buganda, we must work like the parts of a vehicle, understanding the people we work with. We do not want conflict or laziness in service.”
The Katikkiro of Buganda noted that the Kingdom’s servants belong to one household under the Kabaka, and can only perform well when they know and understand each other.
He thanked the organizing committee for this year’s theme, “Ommanyi,” and for preparing the games successfully.
He also urged heads of all Kingdom institutions to always encourage their staff to participate in these games.
