One of Buddu’s players showing disappointment after the team’s elimination. Buddu knocked out of the Masaza Cup; Kyaggwe, Buweekula and Ssingo advance. The 2025 Buganda Masaza Cup has reached its climax as the group stage nears completion, with some counties bowing out while others advance to the knockout rounds. Last year’s champions, Buddu, are among the eliminated teams after failing to progress beyond the group stage. They started with a 1-0 win over Gomba in the opening match, but things quickly turned around. Out of nine games played from a possible ten, Buddu managed just two wins, three draws, and four defeats in the Bulange Group. This early exit adds to the tournament’s history, proving once again that since its inception in 2004 no county has ever defended the trophy consecutively. Buddu remain stuck at three titles in the 21-year history of the competition. The counties that have already secured qualification for the knockout stage include Kyaggwe, Ssingo (from the Muganzirwazza Group) and Buweekula (from the Masengere Group). Other counties still waiting for final results are Buluuli, Busujju, Ssese, Kkooki, Mawokota, Kabula, Bugerere and Kyaddondo. Only eight teams will qualify: two directly from each group and two of the best third-placed teams across all groups. Meanwhile, the counties confirmed eliminated this year are Buvuma, Bulemeezi, Mawogola, Butambala, Gomba, Buddu and Busiro. This past week saw each team play their ninth group game. Kyaggwe had gone eight matches unbeaten until Ssingo handed them their first defeat, 2-0, at Bishops SS–Mukono. Bugerere also stumbled, losing 3-0 to Mawokota in Buwama. At this stage, each county has just one final match left, all scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 3:00 pm.
