Among the attendees at the last funeral rites for the late Paul Kasujja Kawooya, was the Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga. The ceremony started with a prayer mass led by the former Bishop of Lugazi, Mathius Sekamanya.
Bishop Sekamanya expressed the importance and the need for heirs to be good, calm and respectful leaders so that they can be able to uphold the legacy of their families. He said “Listen to people, reflect on self, don’t dictate, analyze a given matter or issue. Paul said it’s not bad for you to drink some alcohol but do so responsibly.” Emmanuel Buwembo was installed as the heir of the late Paul Kasujja Kawooya.
The Katikiro, Peter Mayiga, said people who have continuously copied the western culture have greatly contributed to diminishing our tradition and culture claiming that they were acts of long ago, stating that “What eradicates tradition and culture usually comes from within that culture as people tend to leave their own practices and instead adopt the foreign ones.
Therefore, if we want to preserve the tradition and culture of Buganda as we sang in the Buganda anthem that they originated long ago, then we have to preserve all things of long ago. But we can modify some of them depending on the current need.” The Katikiro also said that people don’t want to follow history, yet it is history that explains the present and the future.
The Katikkiro further expounded “Mr. Paul Kasujja was born to Zakaliya Kasujja of Bulamu. Emmanuel Buwembo is born to Paul Kawooya of Najjanankumbi. So, even when he was still alive, he would still talk about history, because the moment you start talking about your grandparents it means you are now grown up and whatever you say is of long ago. Can someone live without history?”
The State Minister for Youths and Children’s Affairs in the central government Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi thanked the late Mr. Kawooya Kasujja for the work he did in the Buganda government and in the Church of Uganda on religious affairs saying “start putting effort towards acts that you don’t expect rewards because they are your earthly rewards. Emmanuel, I want to tell you that all people that are here today have confirmed and are happy that you are the right person to be the heir.”
The Katikiro of the Ngeye clan, Mark Sebunya, asked the heir not to sell off the properties of the late, saying “take good care of your siblings and there shouldn’t be any misunderstandings amongst you. Your words have been good and inspirational and it’s good that you have committed yourself to work towards adding to what the late had achieved.”
Emmanuel Buwembo, the heir, pledged to cooperate with other people including taking good care of the properties of the family saying, “I will respect my parents, siblings, friends to my late father, all religious leaders, and I commit myself to stay in my Christian faith.”
The ceremony was also attended by H.E the Vice President of Uganda Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, the former Katikiro of Buganda Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi, the State Minister of Sports Charles Bbakabulindi, Members of Parliament, and others.
