KINGDOM OF BUGANDA
OFFICE OF THE KABAKA
CONDOLENCE MESSAGE
To the families of those that lost their loved ones in an accident on Lake Victoria the night of Saturday of 24th when the boat they were traveling on capsized, I convey my condolences. This news has shocked the nation.
Judging by the pictures of the deceased circulated on several media platforms, we have seen that most of the deceased were still young people. Therefore Buganda and Uganda as a whole have lost persons who would have been leaders of tomorrow and with promising careers.
Recreation and partaking in various types of entertainment is not wrong, but safety and care must be put into consideration.
The incident that led to the death of so many people on Lake Victoria could have been avoided if the boat had been inspected and approved as fit to ply the lake.
Government organs in charge of water transport should always have guards patrolling the lake, to inspect boats that transport passengers as well as fishing boats, to avert such disasters. Every passenger on a boat should have on a life jacket for safety which will prevent drowning.
I appeal to Ugandans to avoid drinking too much alcohol or using harmful drugs like Enjaga as these impair one’s judgment during a crisis.
We cannot forget to thank the Almighty for saving some of the people on the boat and continue to pray for all those touched by the tragedy in one way or another, for all who lost a child, sibling or friend. May God comfort and strengthen you as you grieve and may the souls of the departed rest in peace.
