His Majesty, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has paid tribute to the remarkable service of the late Owek. Nelson Kawalya, the former Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, who passed away yesterday.

The Kabaka’s message, conveyed by the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, was read before the congregation gathered at Namirembe Cathedral to pray for the deceased.

The Kabaka described Owek. Kawalya as a pillar and an exemplary figure in the following areas:

  • Leadership: The late Kawalya was a resilient leader who carried out his duties with integrity and dedication in diverse circumstances.
  • Health Sector: As a servant in the health sector, he uplifted the kingdom by contributing to initiatives that benefited the community, leaving a legacy of compassion and excellence.
  • Buganda Lukiiko: During his tenure as Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, he upheld the dignity of the institution, ensured order, and guided deliberations effectively.

The Kabaka further commended Kawalya’s contributions to his household, the Rotary community, and the Church, where he served as a devoted Christian. His Majesty noted that the late Kawalya embodied the following virtues:

  • Integrity and resilience.
  • Humility and respect for all individuals.
  • Hard work and innovation, setting an example in leadership.

The Kabaka expressed profound sympathy to the family of the deceased, his relatives, friends, Omutaka Kalibbala, and the members of the Enseenene clan for their unexpected loss, which occurred shortly after Kawalya celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Owek. Kawalya served during a challenging period when the kingdom had limited financial resources. Despite this, he made commendable contributions and laid a strong foundation for future leaders.

“We thank God for his life and all the work he accomplished. We pray for all of you to find strength in this difficult time,” said the Kabaka.

This statement was aimed at consoling the Buganda community that had gathered to honor the late Kawalya.
