The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has refuted allegations and rumours suggesting that it plans to impose taxes on donations brought to the palace.
Last year, the Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, expressed concern over reports indicating URA's intentions to tax the Kabaka’s donations, a stance he strongly opposed.
In a meeting with Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga at the Kingdom’s main seat in Bulange Mengo, URA's Commissioner General, John Musinguzi Rujoki, clarified that they have no plans to tax Kabaka’s gifts from his subjects.
He explained that donations and the Kabaka’s gifts do not fall under the three taxable categories in Uganda. Musinguzi emphasised that contrary to rumours, URA only levies employment, business, and property taxes, with donations being exempt. The taxable categories in Uganda include pay-as-you-earn, Business, and Property Tax.
Musinguzi expressed gratitude to the Katikkiro for consistently using his influence to encourage Ugandans to pay taxes, contributing to the success of their work.
Katikkiro reciprocated appreciation to URA for their collaboration with Buganda, acknowledging their partnership with Ekisaakaate of the Queen, Buganda Tourism Authority, Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board, and CBS PEWOSA.
During the meeting, URA demonstrated its support for the Oluwalo fundraising drive, revealing the purchase of a 5-million-shilling certificate from Buganda Kingdom as their first donation for the year 2024

Furthermore, they disclosed their readiness to contribute additional support for the cause of development.
The Katikkiro commended URA for supporting Buganda’s initiatives and urged responsible use of taxpayers' money.
The meeting, attended by the Second Deputy Katikkiro and Treasurer of Buganda, Hon. Roland Ssebuufu, President of BICUL, and others accompanying the President of URA, covered various development issues, affirming their commitment to collaboration in matters of development.
