Statement from the Kingdom of Buganda regarding NEMA's demolition of houses allegedly built illegally in wetlands

Statement from the Kingdom of Buganda regarding NEMA's demolition of houses allegedly built illegally in wetlands

The Kingdom of Buganda has raised concerns over recent actions by NEMA (National Environment Management Authority) regarding unauthorised construction in wetlands.

According to the Kingdom, NEMA has begun demolishing houses built without proper permission in these environmentally sensitive areas, including some on kabaka's land.

The Kingdom emphasises that Section 44 of the Land Act stipulates NEMA's authority over land use in areas like wetlands and forests. This means that even if individuals own land or plots in these zones, they must adhere to guidelines set forth by NEMA.

Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, Minister of Information and spokesperson for the Kingdom of Buganda, urged caution and guidance from NEMA. He stressed the importance of ensuring that people in these areas do not lose their property due to unauthorised land use.

As mentioned in the document below.
