The Buganda Kingdom, in collaboration with Akvo International and GRUNFOS, has launched solar-powered irrigation systems to support farmers during drought seasons.

The Katikkiro of Buganda has called on farmers to acquire these systems to combat the challenges of drought and water shortages in agriculture.

These solar-powered systems aim to increase agricultural productivity while reducing the adverse effects of climate change. The initiative is expected to empower farmers across Buganda, equipping them to adopt modern farming techniques and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The launch event took place in Ssango village, Mawokota, and was presided over by Hon. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, on behalf of Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga.

In his message, Katikkiro Mayiga emphasized that the Buganda Kingdom has numerous initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of its people. However, he highlighted the persistent challenge of water scarcity in the agricultural sector. He urged farmers to proactively prepare for drought by adopting irrigation systems to minimize crop losses.

Katikkiro extended his gratitude to the Child Welfare and Adoption Society for transforming farmland into a demonstration site generating income and serving as a learning center for local farmers in Mawokota. He also commended their efforts in child welfare, particularly through the Nsambya Babies Home.

Hon. Hajjat Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, The Minister of Welfare, Environment and Human Settlements, encouraged residents of Mawokota to actively participate in learning sessions on the demonstration farm, aimed at equipping them to tackle climate-related challenges.

The solar-powered irrigation systems, donated by Akvo International and GRUNFOS, are part of efforts to conserve the environment and support farmers in adapting to climate change.

The event was also attended by HE. Signe Winding Albjerg, Denmark's Ambassador to Uganda, who lauded the partnership between Denmark and Buganda in fostering sustainable development.
