The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has encouraged athletes to make the most of the fame they achieve by planning for their future and ensuring personal growth and development.

He delivered this message on Wednesday during a meeting at Bulange, Mmengo, with athletes led by Halima Nakaayi and Winnie Nanyondo.

“I thank you for uplifting the image of our nation globally through sports. I urge you to use this moment of fame to prepare for your future because, in sports, there comes a time when the body can no longer perform,” Katikkiro Mayiga said.

Katikkiro emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline and good character. He noted that talent can be a stable source of income, but only when nurtured with care and focus.

“Avoid alcohol, immoral relationships, bars, and other destructive habits, as these can ruin both your life and your talent,” he advised.

The Minister for Youth, Sports, and Talent, Owek. Robert Sserwanga, highlighted the Kingdom of Buganda’s efforts to promote talent development. He shared plans to construct sports facilities in various counties to nurture young talent.

“Safeguard your lives with a winning attitude. Your well-being is critical, not just for you, but also for maintaining the pride of your communities,” he added.

Renowned Ugandan athlete Halima Nakaayi was joined by Winnie Nanyondo, Ronald Musagala, and Julius Kiplangat in the meeting.

Nakaayi urged young people to work hard and develop their talents, calling on parents and schools to support the discovery and growth of children’s abilities.

“Dedication, courage, self-discovery, and faith in God are crucial in this journey. Everyone has talent; the key is to start with what you have and build on it,” Nakaayi said.

She also presented her medals to the Katikkiro and shared her journey as an athlete, including her plans for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan, following the 2024 Paris Olympics.
