Katikkiro calls for Dr. Kizza Besigye’s release at the 2025 Oluwalo launch in Bulange, Mengo
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the central government to release Dr. Kizza Besigye, in line with a recent ruling by the Supreme Court.
Katikkiro Mayiga made this appeal at Bulange, Mengo, on Friday while launching the 2025 Oluwalo fundraising initiative.
He stated that detaining Dr. Besigye while he is unwell paints a negative image of the country and contradicts President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s assertions about upholding the rule of law and justice in Uganda.
President Museveni has often emphasized that his government adheres to legal principles and fulfills its obligations to the citizens.
Owek. Mayiga welcomed the President’s remarks during the swearing-in of the new Court of Appeal judges, where he stressed the importance of a strong legal system as the foundation of the nation.
However, the Katikkiro maintained that Dr. Besigye should be released, and if there are any legal matters to be addressed, they should be handled while he is at home.
It is worth noting that several leaders, including religious figures, have condemned the continued detention of Dr. Besigye despite his health condition.
