The fallen historic tree
The Katikkiro urged the University of Kyambogo to plant a new tree to replace the fallen tree.
This request was conveyed in a written statement by the Katikkiro, where he explained the historical significance of the fallen tree and the importance of the location where it was planted.
He emphasised the tree's significance, stating that it played a crucial role in the creation of Uganda, as it all began with Muteesa’s letter. The missionaries, followed by the colonial rulers, marked a pivotal era, and the 'Treaty of Security' signed in 1894 between the British and King Mwanga, the son of Muteesa I, laid the foundation for the Uganda we know today.
How huge it looked
The Katikkiro further explained that Muteesa I's letter was instrumental in attracting the first teachers. In 1877, the Protestant Church Missionary Society (including Alexander Mackay) missionaries arrived, followed by the White Fathers (Fr. Lourdel and Bro. Amans) Catholics in 1879. Notably, King Muteesa I wrote this significant letter under the fallen tree.
The Katikkiro requested the University administration to plant a new tree at an identified site, with a clear statement of its historical significance.
